Kochi: Many people are surprised to see the cluster of stars floating across the sky in many places in the state. Comments appeared on social media that the sight seen in the sky on Friday evening could be aliens and not a comet. But what the bright objects that moved in rows were not clear except to a few. In Kerala, however, it did not appear everywhere.
Small satellites launched as part of Starlink internet project appeared in Kerala sky. Starlink is a satellite project implemented by the SpaceX company led by Elon Musk. Apart from India, this project is being piloted in many other countries. Around 6.58 pm on Friday, these satellites traveled like a procession in the north-west direction in many places in Kerala. There were more than fifty moons in this range. These moons will appear again at 4.58 am on Sunday.

SpaceX plans to bring high-speed internet to 40 countries around the world using a fleet of small satellites in low orbit. These satellites travel at an altitude of 550 km from the ground level. SpaceX has a plan to start mobile service globally by 2023 using these. As part of this, satellites are being launched from 2019. So far the company has launched about 3000 small satellites. The signals transmitted from the stations on earth reach the consumers through satellite. SpaceX plans to send a total of 12,000 satellites in the first phase. Later, the company aims to increase the total number to 42,000. It is estimated that currently Starlink is providing internet service to around five lakh people. The expected cost of the project is around 82,000 crores.
The idea of providing Internet service using a satellite network dates back to the 1980s. But SpaceX started planning for this in 2004.
Satellites the size of a car
Each of the white dots in the sky is about the size of a car. The satellites launched in the second generation will almost double this. The size of the solar panels when deployed is about 20 meters. Right after the launch the line looks like a line but later on it changes its character. The sight seen yesterday is moving in a line in a fixed orbit. When deployed in a network, their arrangement is such that six to eight satellites appear at the same time in several places in the sky. Signals from satellites are delivered to the router using receivers similar to DTH dish antennas in homes and offices.
Experts are concerned
At the same time, experts are not a little worried about filling the sky with satellites for private use. It is alleged that there will be a threat to the planes. It is alleged that there are currently too many satellites in orbit and this is hampering space observation. And many point to the possibility of future satellites colliding with each other and crashing into the Earth.

But SpaceX says that the satellites have krypton-fueled hall thrusters to bring the expired satellites back to Earth, so that the inactive satellites will return to Earth. The company also states that it will reduce the reflection of satellites and have collision avoidance settings to facilitate aerial observation.
