To tackle cybercrime they urgently need law; there are several

In order to face critical situations such as the one that occurred with the cyber attack against the Army, derived from which sensitive information of the President of the Republic was revealed, the Chambers of Senators and Deputies announced their intention to prioritize the configuration of a law in the matter.

The federal deputy of the PVEM, Javier López Casarín, president of the Science, Technology and Innovation Commission, pointed out that in this month that begins there will be an initiative to have a federal cybersecurity law, while Senator Ricardo Monreal announced that the The upper house is also preparing a reform on the matter.

He recalled that currently, when a cybercrime is reported, “it is considered common law, so it is required to be registered in the illicit federal jurisdiction to combat it effectively, within the framework of a national security strategy.”

In a statement, he mentioned that, since it is a sensitive issue because it reveals sensitive information of the chief executive, which “is of a national security nature”, it is necessary to work immediately on new regulatory frameworks to shield the security of institutions and their public servants.

“From Congress we have warned of the risks we face due to the lack of solid cybersecurity legislation, which prevents us from acting forcefully against those who attack State institutions and national infrastructure,” he warned.

The PVEM legislator considered that this law is a priority because, he said, Mexico ranks first in Latin America in attempted cyberattacks, with 156 billion reported in 2021, that is, about 427 million a day, which are committed in various fields, from financial to recreational.

In the country, he indicated, there are 84 million Internet users who must be protected; It is no coincidence that attempts at fraud, extortion, identity theft and personal data theft through digital platforms are on the rise, as there are legal loopholes that allow criminals to act with impunity.

“Cybercrimes cannot be treated like any other; they must be classified as illicit under federal law and not under common law, as has been the case up to now, because in this way the sanctions are not exemplary”, he pointed out.

The legislator pointed out that, for the elaboration of the bill, in February of this year a permanent work table was installed to which more than 100 participants have joined, including representatives of civil society and private initiative, whose contributions have allowed nurturing the legislative proposal.

From his trench, the coordinator of Morena in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal, assured that in Mexico there is a “delicate” issue related to cybersecurity and, therefore, announced that they will legislate to have regulations on the matter.

Through a video message broadcast on his networks, he pointed out: “Today in Mexico there is a serious problem with the security of the files and with the information of the Ministry of National Defense, which apparently was hacked and intervened by alleged criminals.”

The brunette asserted that it is necessary to take care of all sensitive information, as well as maintain information systems, in addition to legislating and applying cybersecurity measures, especially in dependencies that are of the utmost importance for the country’s sovereignty.

He said that in this case are the Secretaries of National Defense, the Navy, as well as the Attorney General’s Office (FGR); “It is delicate and we have to act so that our country is not vulnerable to interest groups and crime.”

He pointed out that what has been revealed by the media about the violation of information in important secretariats is delicate, and puts the country at risk, and therefore “it must be viewed very seriously, since in the Senate we are going to review the entire matter. of cybersecurity, since there are already initiatives to be approved and we have advanced in the fundamental agreements”.
